Is matched betting legal in South Africa?
Yes, for adults aged 18 and over. You are using promotions that licensed South African bookmakers choose to offer their own customers. You are not exploiting a loophole or breaking a law, and you are not betting against the bookmaker. Stick to bookmakers licensed by a provincial gambling board, which is most of the well-known names, and expect to complete FICA verification on each one. What you must not do is run more than one account at the same bookmaker under different names. One person, one account, always.
Is this gambling?
Matched betting is a betting strategy that uses opposing bets to reduce exposure to the sporting result. It still involves placing real bets with gambling operators, so it is not risk-free and it is not a way to avoid gambling rules. The aim is to cover both sides and take the bookmaker promotion rather than predict a winner. If I stop covering both sides and bet on outcomes for entertainment, that becomes ordinary gambling, and I have paid for that mistake.
How much do I need to start?
R300. That is what I actually started with on 3 August. Your first offer needs an R50 qualifying bet at the bookmaker and roughly R250 sitting in BetMatch to cover the lay liability. That is the whole entry cost, and it is enough to complete your first offer and see the system work with your own eyes. Every cent after that comes from recycling what you already have.
Can I lose money?
Yes, so let me be straight about it. Each qualifying bet costs a small, known amount, usually a few rand, and the calculator shows you that cost before you place anything. That is a planned expense, not a loss. Where people actually lose money is mistakes: forgetting to lay, using the wrong stake, laying the wrong market, or taking an offer whose deposit is bound to the bonus. I have made those mistakes and I have cost myself money doing it. The answer is not to avoid the risk, it is to make your first ten mistakes cost R20 instead of R2,000.
Is matched betting taxed in South Africa?
Tax treatment can depend on your circumstances and the nature and frequency of the activity. Keep complete records of every deposit, bet, extraction and withdrawal, and ask a registered tax practitioner if the amounts become material. This is not tax advice.

I answer every question that comes through the form, and the awkward ones usually turn out to be the most useful for everyone else.
Bring it to the live session
The last fifteen minutes are entirely questions. This is the fastest way to get an answer, and you often learn from what other people ask too.

Most "how do I" questions are answered by following one real bet from start to finish. It covers the exchange, the lay stake, the free bet toggle and the settlement.

Anything about stakes, liability or cost is best understood by typing numbers in and watching what changes. There is no way to break it.

An hour of watching beats another week of reading. Bring your questions, or bring nothing at all and just watch the offer go through, live on screen.
Free. Camera off is completely fine, and most people do exactly that.
